Course Overview
The STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) course is mandatory for all seafarers under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. It provides every crew member with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to respond to onboard emergencies.
At GCTC, we deliver the full BST package across five integrated modules in our purpose-built marine training facility. Each module combines classroom theory with hands-on practical exercises using real survival craft, firefighting equipment, and first aid simulations.
What You Will Learn
- Personal Survival Techniques — abandon ship procedures, lifeboat boarding, and survival at sea
- Fire Prevention and Firefighting — classification of fire, equipment handling, and team response
- Elementary First Aid — CPR, AED use, bleeding control, and medical emergency response
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities — shipboard safety culture, communication, and hazard awareness
- Security Awareness — recognizing threats, maintaining vigilance, and reporting procedures

Requirements
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Valid medical fitness certificate for seafarers
- Ability to swim and participate in physical drills
- Valid passport or national ID for certification records
Certification
Upon successful completion of all five modules and the final assessment, candidates receive STCW-compliant certificates for each module. Certificates are recognized by flag states and maritime authorities worldwide and remain valid for five years.
